Mr Simon Purdue is a Senior School Mathematics teacher and Senior School House Coordinator (Jenkins) at Wesley College. Simon is – and has been – a wonderful mentor for a countless number of Wesley College students. His ability to motivate students, even if they might not enjoy the subject, is truly remarkable.

Why did you become a teacher?

I was completing my B. App Science at university when I started tutoring children from underprivileged families. The tutoring was unpaid and I was moved when the family, whose son I was tutoring, shared a meal with me as a token of gratitude and everyone received less food because I joined them for dinner.

What is your favourite teaching memory?

I have so many favourite memories, but a special moment was when Neil Thomas, who I taught for Applicable Maths, won the Beazley Medal.

Why Wesley?

I was working at Applecross SHS and a job at Wesley College was advertised. I had lived in Como/South Perth for most of my life and thought it would be an exciting challenge to work at such a prestigious school.
