Nicholas Chua (12G) was the recipient of the William Peet Prize for Dux of School for 2019. On top of his academic pursuits, Nicholas got involved in many of the different co-curricular activities that Wesley has to offer, meaning that he made the most of his time at the College. Having just completed his WACE exams, we had a Q&A session with Nicholas to learn more about his achievement and his experiences.

How does it feel to be the Dux of School for 2019?

It is hard to put it in words, but it really is just an amazing feeling. To be honest I was not expecting it at all, and the moment was all too surreal at the time to believe it. It was however, a moment that I will always remember.

What makes Wesley special?

My time at Wesley was wholesome at the very least. It was an environment that made me feel like no matter where I was, there was always someone there for me, whether it was a staff member, teacher or another student. Additionally, Wesley did not just offer the regular academics in the classroom, but also an enormous range of co-curricular activities that suited every person in some way. Whether it was sport, debating, F1 in Schools or the numerous music ensembles, there was something for everyone to broaden their experiences at Wesley. What really made Wesley special however, were the countless services on offer that provided help for students in all aspects of their school lives. From the after-school help classes held by the teachers, to the amazing career development and work experience run by Ms Duncan, Wesley can cater for each individual person, including myself, and that is what made Wesley so special for me.

What are you planning on doing next year?

I am planning to attend university next year, and I’m really excited to see what it’s all like there. I’m keen on both UWA and Curtin University in Perth to study something along the lines of Computer Science and then hopefully Medicine. I am also considering universities in Sydney and Melbourne, including UNSW and Melbourne University.
