Heading into the break, there’s a lot to like about Summer Sport at Wesley. Hear from our Sport Captains as they summarise their seasons at the midpoint of the PSA fixtures.
Wesley Basketball
Position: Third
In a season comprising of three wins and three losses, the 1st V Basketball season is off to a great start. Basketball Captain, Ryan Duke-Yonge (Year 11), gives us an insight into their season.
‘We have had a very successful Term 4, placing third on the PSA ladder. Early injuries meant that a number of our key players were sidelined, however the team has hit our stride and we are currently on a three-game win streak to finish 2020 season.
We finished the season with a home game against Trinity College, where the boys displayed a dominant performance. Playing in front of a rowdy cheer squad, we managed a 37-point win, which was a great finish to the season.
We are feeling confident and excited for the second half of the season. Stand out performances came from Jake Watson (Year 11) and Hamish Matthews (Year 11) who were standouts with their three-point shooting, and Benjamin Fairbank’s (Year 11) athletic finishing around the bucket. It was also great to see Arthur Jones come back from an early-season injury and dominate the court. A truly great season so far with more to come.
A special mention also goes out to the boys showing up and supporting in the cheer squads and providing an electric atmosphere.’
Wesley Cricket
Position: First
Wesley Cricket looked very promising in Term 4 with a solid 4-2-0 season. With Term 4 counting towards the new-format Darlot Cup competition, Cricket Captain, Hamish Wardell-Johnson (Year 11) guides us through the season so far.
‘Cricket in 2020 was off to a great start. We are currently undefeated, and sitting at the top of the ladder.
Highlights include our final game against Trinity College, where they were 0/101 (chasing 212). Some outstanding bowling and fielding efforts from our boys brought the game back into our favour, and we ended up winning in the final over.
Stand-out performances were seen from Benjamin Woodruff (Year 11), Benjamin Middlemas (Year 10), Nicholas Wright (Year 10), Bradley Tuckey (Year 11) and Hamish Wardell-Johnson (Year 11) who all made half-centuries in Term 4. In terms of our bowling, congratulations to our leading wicket takers William Offer (Year 11) (eight wickets at 20.8) and Adam Healy (Year 11) (seven wickets at 18.1) for their contributions so far.
We look forward to being able to continue this good form into Term 1 and produce some more positive results.’
Wesley Tennis
Position: Fifth
Wesley Tennis currently ranks fifth with a 1-4 record for the season. Tennis Captain, Liam Paull (Year 11), tells about the season so far.
‘Overall this year has definitely been a learning opportunity for the team. For many of us, 2020 has been our first year playing in the 1st VII Tennis Team. Looking ahead, we are lucky enough to have the majority of the team in Year 10 and below, which looks to provide a great base for the future. The sportsmanship and teamwork have been outstanding and I have loved every minute I have spent with them this term.
Our best round was against Aquinas College. We came onto the court with a positive attitude and a lot of motivation. At the end of the day, the team came out on top with 16 sets to eight. We had officially achieved our first win and it was good to see the smiles on our players’ faces.
One of the standout individual performances that comes to mind would have to be from our Number 4, Thomas McKenzie (Year 7), during the Guildford Grammar School match. After losing the first set, Thomas never gave up, put in the effort and pushed through to win the second set, 6:3 5:7.
I’m looking forward to watching our team grow in 2021. Already having so many boys come up and introduce themselves to me, and telling me that they’re striving for the 1st VII is really pushing tennis culture in the right direction. I’m looking forward to how well the team will fare next year.
Wesley Volleyball
Position: Fourth
Volleyball had an impressive 3-3 record in Term 4. After a strong win in the final round against Trinity College in Round 7, Volleyball Captain, Bailey Williams (Year 11), tells us about the season.
‘Volleyball had a decent start to the season in 2020. To finish the term with 3-3 with a very young and inexperienced team is a great effort from the boys. Our best performance so far was without a doubt our last game against Trinity College where we had a dominant 3-0 win. We will be looking to build on this start, and aim to continue our recent run of form in the back half of the season in 2021!’
Wesley Water Polo
Position: Third
Water Polo Captain, Peter Bruce (Year 11), summarises the season for us.
‘Water Polo at Wesley performed very well, with great improvements in comradery and team spirit across the various age groups in the squad. The season has been very exciting so far, with an exceptional team performance against Christ Church Grammar School. Coming from one goal down, we scored three clutch goals in the final minutes of the last quarter, resulting in our first win against Christ Church Grammar School in seven seasons!
Standout individual performances included, Harry Tucker (Year 9), racking up five goals against Hale School and scoring the winning goal in the final moments of the match. The team is looking forward to the first fixture after the break, as we are hoping to beat Scotch College, having lost to them by one goal last time we played.’
Wesley Rowing
Following an extensive pre-season program, Captain of Boats Joshua Wong (Year 11) looks forward PSA Rowing season commencing in Term 1 of 2021.
‘Rowing has had an excellent start to the season with huge improvements in culture and attitudes. I’m so excited to see how far the squad can make it by the Head of the River regatta.
Our best performance has come from our Year 10 rowers, who finished second at Aquinas College by under a second. The Year 10’s also had an excellent performance at the Western Australian Institute of Sport regatta.’
