Generosity has been a consistent part of the story of Wesley since the College gates first opened in 1923. And since then, every student who has attended Wesley has benefitted because of the gifts from parents, alumni, and staff.
Scholarships are an exceptionally special part of Wesley’s history. When we asked past and present scholarship recipients what their Wesley Scholarship made possible, we were blown away.
Evangelos Hajigabriel (08-21), OWCA Presidents’ Scholarship Recipient
It’s a big honour to receive one and after receiving mine, I was told about the previous recipients of the same scholarship and all of the amazing things that they had gone on to achieved. It’s such an honour to join that list of recipients. Along with the honour also came responsibility. Responsibility to show that I was deserving to be a part of this esteemed group of people.
Receiving a scholarship was an extra driver encouraging me to excel. It also had a big effect on my confidence. It showed me that there were other people who believed in me.

My ES Craft Scholarship has made a deep engagement with the Arts and music possible. I have been given a number of incredible performance and personal development opportunities, opportunities that I didn’t even know existed. These have allowed me to grow as a musician and person. It truly feels like Wesley is investing in my growth and performance skills.
My scholarship has made it possible for me to step forward and try new things and really follow my passion, music.

The opportunities I’ve had at Wesley would not have been possible without a scholarship.
Before I came to Wesley, I didn’t really know much about who I was, or my culture. The scholarship has given me the opportunity to connect with my culture and really widen my understanding of what it means to be Indigenous. Through Wesley I’ve had the opportunity to connect with people because of our shared culture. I’ve learnt to play the didgeridoo and to dance. My first performance was at Moorditj by Moonlight, one of the biggest events in the Wesley calendar. I was able to be involved in creating the sand mural – it was such a cool experience.
This year, we are honoured to have How Ridiculous co-founder and Old Wesleyan Brett Stanford (01-05) as the patron of our 2022 Annual Giving Appeal. Brett is a shining example of the impact of receiving a Wesley bursary. You can read more about his remarkable career here.
