Ian Dick (36-44)
Born in Boulder in 1926, Ian Dick came to Wesley in 1939, the youngest of three immensely talented brothers. Following in the footsteps of older brothers David Dick (1932–36), the 1936 College Captain and a Western Australia hockey player, and Alec Dick (1936–39–40), a Sheffield Shield cricketer, Ian’s sporting ability was apparent from an early age.
He was involved in athletics and football, however it was in hockey and cricket where
Ian truly excelled. In his final year as College Vice-Captain, he received Colours in hockey and cricket, where he spent three years in the 1st XI.
After attending Wesley, Ian became a Sheffield Shield cricketer and Australian field hockey player. Ian played one first-class cricket match for Western Australia, in 1950. He made his hockey debut for Western Australia in 1946, and his debut for Australia in 1948. He represented Australia in every match from 1948 to 1958, and captained the team in the hockey tournament at the 1956
Olympics in Melbourne, scoring Australia’s first goal in Olympic competition.
He also captained Western Australia. Ian was inducted into the Western Australian Hockey Hall of Champions in 1991, and was inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame in 2008.
