Making an effort to put others first is an important component of a community and a vital part of the co-curricular program. A community oriented approach incorporates taking the time to listen to others and respecting their opinions, assisting those in need and involvement in activities that benefit the community. Often the efforts of students are intrinsically rewarded, in addition to learning new skills and gaining confidence when communicating with adults. Only a small component of the Community Service program is associated with fundraising. Home based activities, letter writing to students in New Guinea, Chess with Senior Citizens and environmental projects are just some of the activities that are available to students. A feature event is a voluntary Year 8 trip to Christmas and Cocos Islands, where boys support the schools’ English studies and work with local students on their environmental projects.
