Choosing to send your child to boarding school is a major decision. A part of easing the impact of that decision is knowing that, when your son is in boarding, he will be part of a vibrant, nurturing family environment which will care for his well-being, encourage his growth and uniqueness and support him in becoming a happy, responsible individual.
For over 80 years, Wesley College has been a favoured boarding choice for Western Australian families, as well as many others from interstate and overseas. Set in attractive landscaped grounds, with onsite swimming pool, gymnasium, library and other support facilities, boarders also have, within leave guidelines, easy access to Perth city, the Swan River, public transport and local shopping precincts.
Wesley College boarding has recently been refurbished to provide excellent modern facilities, whilst still retaining the intimate and comfortable feel for which Wesley Boarding is known. The boarding facilities have received new cubicles, new bathrooms, new common areas, and a ‘link building’ to act as a single entrance and to join the two wings of the boarding house. The boarding house offers private cubicle accommodation for 147 boys.
The new facilities enhance the uniqueness of the Wesley boarding experience. This is generated from the strong pastoral links that exist between staff and students, which is formed around a pastoral care structure based on year group levels. The boarding Year Coordinators are members of the academic teaching staff, which allows a true link between the boarders’ needs in the day school and the factors which affect them in their living conditions. Year Coordinators ‘follow’ their year group through the Boarding House, building a relationship with both the family and the boarder over a number of years. The exception to this is the Middle School Boarding Coordinator whose is specifically responsible for boarders in years 7 and 8.
By no means are all boarding schools the same and Andrew Wrigley, Head of Boarding, believes that the Wesley boarding experience is enhanced by the breadth of pastoral support structures which are in place. The building of relationships over time with between boarders and Year Coordinators, the involvement of other residential staff, the fact that everyone in boarding, and their families, live on site, ensure a relaxed, family type environment. Add to this a strong support network for academic achievement and effort, comprehensive health services available to boarders, organised activities program and co-curricular opportunities and each boarder assigned to a Tutor Group with a teacher from the day school, and it can be seen that boys who board are supported in a huge number of ways.
Boarding at Wesley is a rich educational experience that focuses on:
Boarders are also fully involved in the traditional Inter-House competition within the school, and compete in one of two boarding Houses, Cygnet or Tranby.
Boarding at Wesley is designed to be as much of an educational experience as attending classes or other school activities. We have a strong desire to see all the boys and young men under our care develop in many personal ways that will help them enter the outside world with confidence and be contributors to our community.
Many unique and exciting opportunities are available to all students at Wesley, but particularly Boarders. It is also our desire to see all students make the most of these opportunities and, to this end, our aims are:
We also believe that we must provide the moral and spiritual foundation which comes from living within a Christian framework in order to assist our students to cope with a constantly changing and increasingly complex world.
