Ten Wesley College students have decided to make their Young Achievement Australia company environmentally friendly this year by producing a range of cheeseboards made out of recycled wine bottles.
The wine bottles have been melted or ‘slumped ‘ to form a flat surface product that will be sold at a Trade Expo held on 31 August in King’s Square, Fremantle for $15 each.
The team is aiming to sell 500 cheeseboards during August and will focus on minimising their environmental impact, and promoting recycling throughout their work. The will also be supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Opportunity International.
The mix of Year 10 and 11 students have formed the business, YAcycled, as part of the Young Achievement program which requires them to operate as an actual business, and submit business plans and annual reports for judging by a range of industry leaders from local and interstate companies.
The team will be anxiously awaiting the results of the judging to be presented at the awards night to be held on 7 November at the Mecure Hotel, Perth.
In both 2006 and 2007, Wesley College won the ‘Overall Trade Fair Award’ for the best company expo preparation and performance in addition to a series of other individual and team awards.
